If you’re looking at Davie FL homes for sale, I hope you’ve taken some time off to enjoy the celebration. Broward County is 100 years old this year. There are a number of activities that are designed to bring people in the community together to enjoy the County’s art, history and culture. The last major event is happening the first of October – don’t miss it.
VisualEYES – Broward 100 Mural Project
Starting earlier this year, a group of famous South Florida artists started creating 10 murals in various parts of the County. The artists have been busy conducting community workshops to clarify the character of the surrounding neighborhoods, then translating that information into a mural for the community. Andrew Reid is the artist providing a mural for the Davie area.
Inside Out
Inside Out is an art project that lets a community express itself in black and white photos. If you didn’t have a chance to participate, you will still enjoy the results.
People all over the world have participated in Inside Out projects. In fact, over 200,000 people from more than 180 countries have taken advantage of this opportunity to bring their community together in this unique way. You’ll see the faces of Broward County in several places, including.
- The Urban League of Broward County is dedicated to empowering people in the community. Their Inside Out installation is titled “Breaking the Cycle’ and focuses on people who have fought to overcome obstacles to break the cycle of poverty.
- Westfield Broward Mall is a community-driven center, not just a mall. The events hosted there, including art exhibitions and films give the community more than just a shopping experience. The inside out project there highlights the mix of people and personalities that make Broward County what it is today.
- The Pride Center created panels about family planning and parenting skills supporting the LBGTQ community, especially topical in light of recent marriage equality laws that have been passed in Florida. The Center serves Broward County’s large same-sex couple residents; Broward is home to the second largest same-sex couple population in the U.S.
Calendar 100
The Calendar 100 guide is an excellent place to find information about events sanctioned for the 100 year celebration. While many events have been held earlier this year, you’ll still find lots of interesting things to see and do this year. There are even sanctioned events in 2016 to enjoy.
Duende Weekend – October 2 through 4, 2015
Duende is the last big event celebrating Broward County. You can download a PDF that describes the schedule of events and a map showing where different activities will take place. On Friday the 2nd, the celebration will take over SW 2nd Street, and there will be lots of family fun at Funtastic Friday in ArtsPark.
Saturday activities are being billed as the “Party of the Century.” Festivities will start at 11am and still be going strong in the wee hours of the morning. Sunday’s events at the Pompano Beach Amphitheater will center on competitions for both artists and musicians.
Does this sound like fun? There are still some opportunities to volunteer to support the celebration. Check the opportunities here.
